THE TARIFF COMMITTEE.
The Tariff Committee recently appointed by the House of Representatives have brought up the following report : — "The committee appointed to consider and report on the question of wnat relief can be afforded to manufacturers in this colony, by lessening or abolishing duties at present levied on articles used by them in their respective manufactures, and on other means by which the establishment of colonial industries may be promoted, have the honor to make the following interim report :— ' " The committee recommend that the following articles be admitted free of duty :~ Grindery, except heel and toe plates ; boot lining, mo rocco, roan, japanned and enamelled leather, seal" skins and goat skins, saddlers' ironmongery and hames, carriage bolts, nuts, screws, tyre bolts, shackle-holders, and other iron fittings, hattors' material, almonds used in confectioners' manufactures, sheet zinc, plain galvanised iron, metal frames for bags and satchels. "The committee recommend that certain duties be increased as follows : other than tallow, l£d per lb, inaiead of Id per lb ; sashes, plain, 2s per pair ; sashas, glazed, with ornamental glass, 4s per pair : doors, plain, 2s each ; doors, plain! 2s each ; doors, glazed, with ornamental glass, 4s each ; and that the
duty on Australian wine bo restored to 4s per gallon. " The committee do not recommend an import duty on coal ; hut consider it advisable, in order to assi.st (he coalmining industries, port duo.3 at coal ports, as well as railway charges on coals, be reduced to the lowest possible point. It is recom memicd that no duty on green fruit shuukl be imposed."
