Hkld Over. — Onr leader, Engineer's report to Manawatu Highways Board, some locals, and other interesting matter, are unavoidably held over.

Roads Wasted. — At the Highways Board meeting yesterday a letter was read from a settlor, urging the Board to make a road near his property, and stating that owing to the bad condition of the road there a poor German had to bury his child in his potato patch, because he could not take the body to a burial place.

Hammond, of Otaki, but as tho contents of the same are not of general interest, we cannot publish them. School Picxic— Owing to the treat of the children connected with All Saints' Sunday School next Monday, the State School will be closed on that day.

At The Sale. — Mr Loudon's great clear" ing sale still continues to attract large numbers of persons. Daily from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., with half an hour's intermission for lunch, Mr Thynne wields his haiuner, knookiug down bargains to the public. That the sale is literally a olearing one, is manifest ; in fact, the wonder is where the goods come from, and where the people get the money to buy thorn. Such a thing has never b«foro been seen in the district, und persons are becoming so accustomed to going to the sale, that it is almost like a settled institution. As it has been found impossible to olosp the sale in the tirao first specified, we observe it is to continue until the whole of tho goods are disposed of.

English Markets.— The New Zealand Loan and. Mercantile Agency Company report, under date London, November, 19th : —The wool sales opened with spirit on the 18th. They comprised about 80,000 bales, 3,000 bales being sent to the manufacturing districts direct* home buyers purchasing freely. Greasy wool has advanced Id per lb. since date of last sales. Superior combing, washed, and scoured, have advanced l£d to 2d per lb. Clothing washed has ad* vanoed Id per lb. ; medium and superior greasy advanced $d to Id per lb; orossbred greasy advanced Id per lb ; superior combing, washed and scoured, advanced from 2d to 3d per 16. Lamb's, market easier. Tallow, market quiet ; Btocks of all sorts— about 14,500 caaka. Best mutton, worth £43 per ton; best beef, £40. The wheat market is flat, portion of arrivals heavy, Adelaide, worth 60s per 4961b5. • New Zealand, 68s per 4961b5.

Finance.— The cost of the last election, as far as the colony is concerned, was about £4000. The expenses of the last aesaion, about a month, were nearly £26,000.
