PRBPArtING WOOL FOR MARKET.
Attention is called in the last circular issued by the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Company to an evil whicii appears to be growing, viz., carelessness in the preparation of avool for sale in the Home Market, and wliicli we deem worthy of being placed prominently under the notice of producers of this staple. In accounting for the fluctuations in the price of wool, the Circular makes the following remarks, which should receive tlie hearty attention of every j wool grower in the colony : — A f rth<T inspection of the lat er growths has unfortunately confirmed the opinion I expressed in our Circular No 74, when | wri'ing as to those catalogued duriug tho second series, and although the priced cata logues afford unmistakeable evidence of a much lower rauge of values for Wools from New Ze.il vnd than was reached a yoar a«jo, it mus), nofc bo assumed that the difference correctly represents the f .ill in prices ba tween September, IHJS, and fcho presen month, much of the decline b.eing due t<> the inferior condi iou of the clip vow in the courso of disposal, The irregularity in the values of lambs' wool demands attention, and the position of the home industry has sensibly affected its consump; i-<u.. Burry sorts tire specially neglected, hence ifc not uiifrequ *-ntly happens that tho " friction " in values botwcen the first and second qualities of any one parcel seems abnormal, buyers being readily found for the portion freo from defects and well grown, while they will not compete for the faulty lots. With the decline in valua3 now curront for nearly all descriptions, it behoves growors and shippers to exercise greater care iv tho preparation of wools for this market than has beeu the practico of many in past years. JBuy-rs are now keen in detecting faults whioh under m-ire favorable conditions they would overlook, and accordingly they have not been slow to make complaints in various directious. In the ca.se of several parcels of scoured wool ifc has been found t'jafc in packing, shreds of cottou, twine, and o her like materials have been so iut-r---tuiugled as to cause serious inconvenience and loss to the purchasers. Inthe case of other shipments of wool exception has been I'ikttti to tlieir cou inued nndu-o subdivision, thus incrcasiiig needlessly the number of smull and •' star lots " in the catalogues for which ifc ia well known thafc less com petition exists. It has also been observed chit while some Wools aro unduly akirfcod by d -bitching from the fleeces portions that might with advantage have been left untouched, in the case of others— notably thw lower qualities of cross-breds in tho grease — no attempt has been made in this direction.
Tub DiiviAno.v. — Ou Saturday last, after Messrs Luiuleu ancl Russell hail presented tlio po ition regarding tlio Wellington railway, Mr Johnston mentioned tlio matter of the need of increased wharfage accommodation at Foxton. Mr Russell briefly referred to the great loss and inconvenience to which shipowners were put at present, when iMr Oliver, Minister of Public Works , remirked thit ifc was unnecessary to urge fche claims of the district, as they were fnlly appreciated by the Government, who intended placing a vote on the Estimates for the purposo. which would bo sufficient lo remove the presenfc inconveniences, an d supply the needs of ttie port. Sale or Sheei\ — Tho sheep sold yesterday by order of the bailiff in fche case of Ruwliuson v. Perreau, realised 2s per head, and were knocked down afc that figure to Mr G. Hadfield, of Motoa. Morb Earthquakes. — Another shock of earthquake was experienced at Foxton last evening, at eight minutes past 6. This time ifc was a mild one. Land Court. — The sitting of the above Court afc Foxton, whicii was adjourned by tlio lato Judge Yonng fco this day, will be opened this morning by Major Heaphy, who arrived last night from Wellington to presi :e. The sitting is expected to last this week. Uor.oxiAT. Printers' Register. — The secoid number of the above journal has reached us. It is devoted to matters relating to the craft, and is exceedingly well got up. It should prove invaluable to printers. Lyon And B i, air's Monthly Review has come to hand. It contains some well selected articles, and otlier interesting read iiig matter. Fun and Frolic Troupe. — A performance was given at the Publio Hall, Foxton, by tho above troupe on -Saturday evening lust, when ihere was a good attendance. The enter Uimn cut given was of the " variety " order, aud pilssed off very well. The compauy includes three very clever trapeze performer.-*, ono beiug called " The Flying Ltvdy," ond she is assisted by two male performers. This trio are roally excellent m their work on the treble trapeze, and we very much doubt if any better tlneo hay* performed'in this colony, the lady especially being very clever and courageous. Theiv ui'c also in the company two smarfc boys, aged aboufc 12 &nd» years respectively, who are very entertaining. Tho youugest is a capital dancer, and is also a very good female personator and negro actor lie has evidently been most carefully trained, and will no doubt make a name for himself on the boards. In addition to these performers, there were several others, including a female singer, and some comic men who altogether make up a very emertaiuiug show. Herr lilling, who was with the Georgia Minstrels, is pianist to the troupe. | Wo believe, they will perform here again in about three weeks' time. Thk Frost —The exceedingly warm j summer weai her experienced at the begiuuin" of ihe month has been followed by a change, in which the weather has been bitterly cold at night time, and in the day time also, iv situations expos-. dto tho wind. On Saturday night Just, tliero was a very heavy white frost, just as bad as any experienced at winter timo. Its effect was strongly felt by tlie youug crops, the potatoes appeariug to suffer most, although we do not think the damage sustained vill be very serious. The change was evidently caused by the strong S.E. gale which blew through the straits about Friday. There was a heavy fall of t anow on the Tararua Range, whioh was quite covered on Saturday. Great Sale. — Ifc is unnecessary to re mind those interested of the groat clearing sale, whioh is advortised to take place this week at Messrs YV. J. and F. Loudon's premises, Foxton. Persons wishing to buy merchandise of every description at v cheap rate will have a capital chance of doing so afc this sale, owing to the stook
being so hir^o and varied. The first day's salo will commence on Wednesday, afc 1 1 a.m. Mr Thynuo will wield the hammer on the occasion. Pfi.VNiNtt Machine.— We notice thafc the ener etic propr etors of tho Kuirakau Saw Mills have added a planing machine to their plant, and we believe it is now iv full working order. Wo hope the firm will receive sufllcient orders to keop it in full Bw-ing»B w -ing» Cuoßu. Society. — The usual practice of thealovn Society, will take place at tha Public Hall to-morrow eveuing. After ho practice, a nieeiing will beheld to take into consideration an offer received for the piano. It is desiraole tliat evory member should bo present. A Runnisu ■Devot.— Several enquiriehave lately been made at this offlco as to whether a place for the deposit of ruboish has been up •> iinr t d afc Foxton ; and il so, where such deposit place is. We are unable to answer the question, bub believi- no such .(epot is at pivsmit in existenc-s We thin', ■his is a matter thafc might w-dl be t>kon ■ip by the Board at one>s. The ilo-irability or necessity of snch a place canndt bo ques ti med. At present, a carter is ordered to remove some rubbinh, and ho knows nowhere to cart it to. Perhaps ho deposits it on some one else's ground, a>id thereby gets in o trouble. In other ca<os, perhaps it i* swept out into the streets to* blow about the gutters, and endanger the lives ofhonemen. We think tho Bo ird will be doing a service by moving iv the water. Saouileoe. — A most daring case of sacri-Iftg-e owiuvr«d ut Foxtoo during last weok A man (unknown) deliberately stuck a raudy "' duybdl." announcing the perform ances of a theatrical compauy, on the from part of fche Court House. -Such a thing has never occurred iv New Zealand before, and we think the perpetrator should receive the mo "t condign punishment. Whether the style of architecture of the edifice dovoted to the administration of justico in Foxton is so mu'.'h liko the usual run of glaces devoted to amusement iv up-country townships, that the bill-poster thought he was operating on tlio front of our temple of amusement, we know not, but certain j' is, fchat this reckless man daubed a day bill on thu Court House, and there it remains, alongside of some legal notices. Probably the coimrmy wished the IJ.M. fco pitrouise Iho show, and took this means of bringing it b*jforo his notico. We hear the local guardian of the peace jis fcirfully exercised ovor this gro<s s*ic*ilege, and is determined to "have" that man at all risk and h-.iz.nd, when ho will no doubt receive that pu lishment wiihh tlie heinousivss of hi.s crim : deserves. Tup. litisiiMAX. — This steamer, which forme. ly used to trade on tlu M-tnawatu River, under fche name of the Pioneer, was sold nt Wang mvi by auction on Situ'dai under a writ of ,//••/•/• fueius. She wiu knocked down afc £225 to a Mr A. Njilson L.uu.v. Kkl. — A monster eel, weighing* abou' '201b-i, and measuring Oiri io girth, wacaught in the Manawatu River yesterday. The CuiusTCHi'itu Unemi- loved. — A meeting of the unemployed wis held in thCathedral square recently, and it was resolved to interview Mr Austin, of tho PublicWorks Department. A largo crowd afc oud adjourned to the Public Buildings, when the following r^olntion was submitted — " We, tho undersigned, on behalf of th(300; men out of employment iv Christ church* respectfully beg to request the Government to find employment for those no only willing but able to do a f«,ir day's work, and for which they deem thoy oivght to re i-eive (is per day for such -employment, n> their experience shows that pieco work i not adapted to all parties. In the event o th.} -G-ovorumenfc nofc complying witli th supplication, a large body of tho men am) thoir wives and families must be imme diately snpplied with quaiters (through tin dagistrjtc's or otlier appointed persons), tc keep them from starvation. Mr Austin promised to communicate with tho Govern - nent by telegram at once. Bui Bacon in Di'neihx. — The following is from the Otago Daily Times, of ;. recent date : — The bacon wiibh waseiz id by tho Corporation health inspector.oiiij day lasfc week formed the matter of .-. prosecution, uuder the 81st section of th Public Health \et, at tho Police Court oi Saturday. James Whitelav.-, auctioneer was tho defendant. From tho evidence i appeared cha** the b icon was sou t to Mi Whitelaw's rooms in Rattray-atreefc ly on James R. Scott, an ageut iv Stafford streot Mr Lowry, the inspector, happened to b. passing whilst the bacon was being tin loaded from the express, and noticing that it was bad ho enquired when it was to Be sold, and was told at 2 o'clock in the afternoon. The salo was stopped, and the bacon taken possession of. Mr 13auks, the grocer, who had examined some o£ the bacon which was in the form of' rolled pigs' ohcolfs, said it was decidedly uufifc for human food. Tho only witness for tho dc fence was J. R. Scotfc, who had sent tl,. | bacon to the rooms, and he stated that he had no knowledge of its being bad, anthafc when he was told so bj' the Inspector, he expressed every willingness to have i* destroyed. The Inspector s tid Air White liw had given him evory facility for dealing with the inm-tur.' Mr Watfc, in giving judgment, said that, although thero was no cvi dence that the meat had been exposed for sale, still it had been found upou tho premises of the defendant, and had it nut bee . for the accidental passing by of the Inspec tor. in all probability it would have been offored for sale in the ordinary way, The defendant had rendered himself liable to n total.peualty of £ioo were the Act strictly interpreted," as it provided for a flue of £20 for eacli pieco of moat. As this waij the tirat prosecution under the Act, ha would tako a lenient view of tho case ; still, the defendant mnsfc not get off scott free. He would order the seized meat to be destroyed, and would inflict a fine of 20s, with 7s costs.
An Irishman went to tho theatre for the first time. Just as the curtain descended on the first act a boiler in the basement exploded, atfd he was blown through the roof, coming down on the next stroet. Af er coming to his senses, ho asked, " And what piece do yez play nixt !"
