Wellington-, Friday. We repovt no improvement in trade during the past week, although in s»m-3 quarters thore are indications of more activity and a change for the better. Quotations remain unaltered, with the exception of case brandies, which owing to thu ride in the Home Market, are advanced to 3Gs to 37» per case for ll.irtoH's 1 and Hennery's brands, bulk branJy remainii!! about the same figure: outside brand* of case brandy are also advanced in value.
The most noticeable feature has been the withdrawal from bond of large quantities of tea, over 60,"00lbs having paid duty during,! he week above quoted. It is currently reported that the Government intend to reimpo39 the duties on tea and Bus;ar, and to increase the duty on candles, this being the probable cause of the present excitejnent in the grocery trade. Sugars are advanced 30d per ton ; sperm candles have nUo advanced \\ por lb. In New Zealand produce quotations remain about the samo. Keg butter is worth from BJd to 9d per lb for prime samples, with dull inquiry. Cheese, though full stocked, is quoted at 8d to »H per lb, owinj; to the advanco in Canterbury. Uauon and hams ; moderate stocks of Canterbury oare, at 9.1 to dfcl per lb. Southern flour firm, at £15 per ton for sicks. Oats, full stocks' at 2s 6<l. Maizo in little inquiry, at :is Gil.
