ENGINEER'S REPORT.
OHOUA BIDING. Very Uttlo to report re this riding. Roads generally nre in good order. I have hud a fen* repairs done to load near and at Sandon. There is required a new culvert under the road near Snndon to carry water away. At present time in heavy rains the I'aier is dammed back and flows over road, there not ixinjr sufficient culvert room to take the w.itir; a fmme culvert of sft x Ift Gin v. -a ld be large enough together with the 0110 ;'I«J\V ill. KAWA KAWA EIDIXG. As the dry weather sets in tho road in this Biding is getting in better order ; if any metalling is to be done in this riding this season, tenders should now be called for same and allow contractors .good time to carry the work out. By this nwtun&work will be done much cheaper. ' , AWAHO'' P.tDING. I have had a few slight repairs done to road lines hi this Riding during the month, also called tenders again for fencing in raserve at Foxton. I arranged with T. Bowe, tho ijvryman at Foxton, to bo poundkeeper at Fuxton. This was done with the Chairman's conseart.' HOBOWHESUA RIDING-. I visited Otaki, and arranged with J. Cootes about the pound there. Thffre are required three new culverts under the Couuty roud at Otaki. At present there are two very small slab culver tß, badly constructed, aud not largo enough to carry the water away, i would ask to be allowed to fix three new box culverts of 18in x 24in measurement ; that is, two to replace the two sLb oues, and one new one. This will do away with some of the complaints recently made re blocking the water back by County .Road. Another small contract for bush felliny on tho Ot'iki Foxton Road is finis!).:! j. The natives do not seem inclined to take any more at present ; they ask that 30s to 40.s per chain be paid them for the work. FEIiUIES, AC. The Ohau ferry is not in ns good order as when I visited it before. The hauling line was gone, and we had to wait quite 20 . i miuutes before wo could be crossed iv the K punt. I cautioned Roach about delay to the coach, and he promised to have the necessary hauling line fixed at once, find to at ton d more regularly to the working of the punt.
I purchased a small chain to fix a buoy on a snag a' the mouth of the Ohou river; This snag has been a terror to the coachmen, being right in the traok taken by tho coaches and olhers.
T. Bowe has not done the repairs to sand cuttings ard the road generally to beach that I instructed him to do last month, Tho ferry itself is in good order. Other ferries, no complaints. I have culled tenders for new groin in Oroua Hiver at Awahuri. H. J. Hayns, Engineer to Council.
