MANAWATU HIGHWAYS BOARD.

YESTEEnAY. The Board met at its office, Palmerston North, at 11 a.m., yesterday. Present — Messrs Dalrymple (Chairman), Bruce, Macpheraon, Farmer, Eookel, M'Kenzie, aud M'Ewen. HtNT/TES. The minutes of last meeting were read and confirmed. CORRESPONDENCE From Mr J. T. Stewart, Di&trict Enginepr, informing the Board that the Government \s onld pay half the cost of construction of tho Bridge over the Alungaone Creek, in accordarce with the Engineer's estimate, at a cost of £112. From Mr Whisker, of Feildinar, asking the Board to mince the rate levied upon his property. The rate last year was £1 os, but this year the rate had. been fixed at £5." It was decided the application had been made too late. Letter read from Mr J. Knowles, Undersecretary for Public Works, stating that the Minister was unable to advise the Board as to the course to be pursued to make land offered to the Board for road purposes the property of the Board, and suggesting th\t the proper course would be to consult the Board's solicitor. Letter read from Mr Staite in reference to his charge of £1 Is re Elkiu, deceased, and enclosing annual account for £5 5s. — The guinea was ordered to be paid, and Mr Staite's second offer was not receivad. From the Otaki Highways Board, asking for an early settlement of the amount due to that body by the Manawatu Highways Board, according to the statement of accounts furnished by the Board to Air John Davies. From the Treasucy, etating in reply that the subsidy for current year would be paid as soon as possible. From Mr Itoberts, informing the Board that he intended to charge for every load of gravel taken away, until he was paid for the pit. —It was resolved to inform Mr Roberts 'hat the Board were prepared to purchase the pit at the price named — £20. From Mr "Windleburn, informing the Board that he hail made a " grand " mis take in his tender for work on Bailey's Line, in not charging for formation of sido ditchos, aud asking the Board to grant a sum in consideration of tho work he had done. — The matter was left in the hands of the Engineer. From Thomas Mitchell, asking the Board . to fall a portion of road on the Campbelltown Block. — The request was granted, subject to the usual terms. Letter raad, signed by 11 settlers on Jame's Line, asking the Board to consider the state of the road on that line, which was declared to be impassable in the winter months. Mr James Linton's tender cf £75 for the whole valuation of the Board was accepted. It wa9 resolved to pay the sum of £25 3s 6d owing to the Otaki Highways Board ; and it was also resolved to vote the sum of £iCO towards works at Sanson. STATEMENT OF VARIOUS WARDS.
