OTAKI SLY-GROG CASE.
TO THE EDITOR Of THE MANAWATU HEBAI.D. Sib — Fiat' Juatitial In your report of tbe Resident Magistrate's Court, Foxton, the defendant in the above caio U stated to have said that Samuel l'ratten was a very worthless oharaeter, and he cjuld prore it. His Worship pointed out that unless the witnfiis was previously connoted of perjury, any evidence produced against bis oharaeter would be of no avail. This remark was peculiarly apt and applicable in reply to one who bus been again and again before tbe Court, and taken many oaths. Poor Pratten has his failings, and one is too much lovo of drink, but in common justice I will state that I have teen him pay bis debts unasked, which is more than the other party could boast tf a witness to. I am, &0., 0. a. HiWfON. Otati* O«tob«r IL
