It is gratifying to know that the whipping business done at the Port of Foxton shows a steady increase eacli year, as will bo scon by the subjoined table, showing the pilotage rates received, together with the number of vessels and thoir tonnage, arrived at tho port of Foxton since the beginning of 1877 :— Pilot ago No of Year. rates. vessels. Tonnage. 187? £77 3 0 160 930 1878 82 13 1 136 9167 1879* 82 15 2 120 9780 * Returns for 1;. 79 includo only threo quart**!'-. The above figures are eminently satisfactory. Although the number of vessels arriving in 1878 was fewer by 24 than those wliich arrived the previous year, tho aggregate tonnage was 137 tons greater, evidently showing that the class of vessels was laiger. The first three quarters of the presont year show' up eVen better in the lv.ut'n, the number of vessels being only 10 less than during tha whola of the provious year, whilst a still further improvement has taken place in tlie capacity of vessels engaged m the trade, the tonnage being 010 tons in excess of the total for 1878. When the returns iby the present year are completed, we have no doubt even more satisfactory results will appear.
