THE WHARFAGE CHARG .
— ♦■ TO THE EDITOR OF TUB M .N'.UVATf URIt.U.D. Sin — I have observed upon one or two occasions in the Ma.vawatu I.i:_a_i> and in the Palmerstou paper remarks hi reference to the unjust wharfage charges li'oly imposed upon tho Foxton wharf, which nppoar to me to have been placed for no other purpose than to obstruct th » export timber trado through Foxton ; and what confirms my opinion upon this point is this simple reason:— When the demand for timber in Wangauui was in excess of the supply, very little timber came through Foxton for shipment, but as sjon as the Wauganui trade fell off, and somo of the siwmillers in the .southern portion of this district had an incliu itioti to ship their timber via Foxton, the new charges were apparently made, so that the millers could effect no savins by shipping their timber at the nearest port. Action, are said to speak louder than words, and if acts of this kind are allowed to bo carried on without some pressure being brought to resist them, there will be no necessity for Foxton people to enquire about the wharfage returns being ahowa as formerly ; and as the line becomes opened up farther north, Foxton will suffer the mo:e unless there should be some one to look after the interest of this end ol* the line a.s well as the other. As our Palmerston friends are deeply interested in the port of Foxton, there is no doubt, that with uniteil action, we may soon bo enabled to publish our wharfage return?, and to such satisfaction as will warrant aa endowment for Foxton as well as Waiigaiiui. I am, Sec, Observe.;.
