THE SANDON RAILWAY.
1 . » The information issued by us as an 41 Extra " on Friday of the result of ; the voting for the Sandon Pailway ' scheme, is highly satisfactory. It is to the effect that 274 votes were recorded, representing a rateable value ) of £24,000.' Of these, 264 votes, representing a rateable value of £22,000, were in favour of the railway ; the remaining 10 votes, representing4he other £2,000 were opposed to it. We » regard this as a great victory for the i scheme, as it clearly shows — first, i that the settlers wish the railway to
be constructed, and second, that they are willing to pay the rate, when the time comes. At the same time, we wonlcl point ont that the 10 objector.j represent no insignificant portion of the rateable value, being onctwelfth of the whole number avlio voted. From this it is evident that they arc men of greater property and with a larger stake than the average of those who have declared in favour of the railway. It would be well that the Directors should endeavour to ascertain on what grounds their objections were based, and endeavour, if possible, to remove them. A conciliatory attitude would be the better course to adopt to stamp out all opposition. The strong majority who voted for the scheme will assure the Government that the settlers have every confidence that the line will pay.' The persistent statements that have boon made by certain persons to decry the value of the land in Carnarvon, will receive their denial so soon as the railway is made. For some time past, settlement has been progressing rapidly in that district. Numbers of sections have been taken up in the vicinity of Campbelltown, and we believe a considerable population will be settled before long between Carnarvon junction and the Saudon bush. A remunerative traffic is therefore certain to result upon the line, not only between Foxton and Sandon, but also between the intermediate districts and termini. - We congratulate the district upon the step attained, as both Foxton and Sandon have systematically worked to secure the line. We trust no further delay will take place, but that immediately the Governor's consent is given, the Company will push n with the work of construction. Fuller pa.ticulars of the vote will be found in another column.
