Mr PURCELL'S RETIREMENT.

On tho opening of the Police Court, on Wednesday morning, Mr Ward, E.M., said he desired to make a few remarks. On the previous evening ho had seen from the Manawatu Hkkald that Constable Purcell had retired from tho Police Force. He wished to take the first opportunity of expressing 1 his regret that so valuable an officer had been lost to the service. Constable Purcell had been a great number of years in the service, and he (his Worship) had known him for 11 years, and would say he regarded him as one of the smartest constables iv the force. Of course the duties of a police officer were not always pleasant. 11 o was brought in contact with a great nuinbjer of persons, and could not please all. Still he would say Constable Purcell had won the respect not only of the people of Foxton, but of all who had officially come in contact with him. He was pleased to know that Mr Purcell had been relieved by so painstaking and efficient an officer — he referred to Constable M'Auulty, than whom there was not a quieter and more efficient man in the service. He trusted tho people of Foxton would cheerfully assist him, and hoped Mr Purcell would find his health better, and would QOt have cause to regret sattliug in Foxton.
