MANAWATU LICENCING COURT.

(Before ..T?.' Ward Esq., It.M., Chairman, H. 'Sanson, Esq., J.P., and Dr Rockfllrow, Commissioners.) AWAHUIU UOTBI,. r — • .Schultze, through Mr Staile, applied for a. license for the Aw.ihnri Hotel. It will bo remembered the renewal of the license was refused at. last sitting of the Court, owing to insufficient notice. Tapn? To Whata and GO other nativi-a presented :i petition to. the CJ-Jui'fc, asking thatit.he license bo not granted. The pefci- ' led- to 'great trouble amongsD some of tile turners aeo forth that they objected, as it natives, who ".vent to tlie hotel and got drunk, and their children had to stay . at home aud mind thoir parents. Two petitions "were a^o p'resenteafrom tho .natives in support of the apnli.ua! ion. ■Mi- Slaif.s, ou behalf of applicant, nli^ged that the petition was the result of spite, a3 some of Tapa te Whata's men were turned out of the hotel, oirthe occasion of o party being given by Mv Schultze. He also al leged'thiit nearly all the signatures were thoga of children, and that Tapa himself had been rolling drunk in Feilding a few days ago. I'apa To Wh.ata, on, oath, uocluvod the natives wore suffering through a public house bcim» erected ; he objected to drink being sold in his district ; he sold the land for a public house some years ago before he knew th o' damage it would do ; tlie public house led to trouble, aud fighting. Mo went down the list of names, and declared there wei'vj only six children ou the list ; they signed their own names. Cross examined by Mr Staite — One person wrote several of the names ; his whole tribe originated the petition ; the children could not go to echool because they had no clothes ; ho went to the hotel aljout three months ago, and got drink. By the Court — When the public house was opoU? tho women us.xl to go aud get . drunk. Mi- Staite dwelt ou the hardship and loss Mr Schultze would be put to if the license waa refused. Ue pointed out only a part of the natives were opposed to it, and held it would be*unjust to put the travelling public to gi'eat inconvenience if the liceuse was refused. The Bench retired for a few minutes, and on returning to Court declared that however necessary tho license wub at one time, such was no longer the case. T^ana had himself shown that wore it not*ror the 'temptation at 3?eilding he would have kept sober. Thrusting a public house under the ' vcrjftnoscs of the natives especially when a number objected, would be a bad course, and the Court therefore decided to refuse the application. Application refused. Eill'lltE HOTEL FEILDING. Esteven Bellve applied, through Mr Staite, for a license for a house just erected at Feilding, to be called the Empire Hotel. Mr Stuitosaid the building had cost about £4000, and foui-teen rooms we» % e now ready for use. A petition in favour of tho application was granted, and the plaus*were produced. • Constable Price gave evidence to tho effect that a thii d hotel at Pcilding was necessary ; ho believed there were 22 bedrooms. Sub-Inspector G-oodall thought a third house necessary ; several persons had spoken, to him to that' effect. The application was refused, as a majority of the Bench hold that a third hotel was not necessary at Feilding.
