OTAKI WORKING MEN'S CLUB.
TO THE BIMTOIt OF THE MANAWATU HKUAIiD. Sir,— ln your issue ot the Ist inst. I see a letter signed " Enquirer " concerning the lute OtiiUi Workiug Men's Clv!) (which has been starved to death), wherein lie states that ho was a member thereof, and went to a great deal of trouble to make it a success. Ho may have been a member, but on searching' through the Secretary's books, 1 could not discover his name (I be Here I know his true name) as a member who had paid any G'lub fees, or subscription to its support. Ho also states that the Club was suspended ; that is a mistake, fw3 it was only the Steward that was sus-
peuded, ami that the Secretary holds the money of the Club, and refuses to give it or the books up. rr permit anyone to audit-^^ the- account*. Now, Sir, I understand that^| th*e was an irregular meeting; of the Committee (save the name) at which neither the President or treasurer were present, at which meeting two auditors were elected, whom the Secretary would not acknowledge, considering them unfit persons lor the purpose, nor. were they really members of the Club, as presoribed by the Clab rules. i I'pon enquiry, I fsiid that, both Tren--1 surer. "Enquirer" need not have applied to you for a solution of what he calls a difficult}', as either of the Presidents can oxi plain the matter to any person who has a right to enquire. I would not trouble you with this, but haviug been a member of the defunct Club, and understanding how matters stand, I cannot in justice to the lute officers allow " Enquirer's " letter to pass unchallenged, as the public might think that c; Enquirer " had a complaint. j I think your criticism is fair, and the suggestions should be acted on. I am &c , Defexdeu. : Ofcaki, August 9, 1879.
