Held Over. — A largo quantify of mfc • ter is held over. The Election. — Matters havo now definitely shaped themselves. Messrs Johnston, Snelson, and Halcombe, have declared themselves candidates, and the conflict has begun in earnest. A full report of tho Palmerston meeting appears in another column. We intend to give (he fullest possible reports of the first speech of each cnudidnte, so that the elestors may know tho precise views of those who seek their suffrages. Mr Halcombo's ppoech appenrs in this issue. Committee.— All supporters of Mr Walter Johnston should attend the meeting tomorrow morning at the Atheneeum, to form a strong working Committee. Speech.— Mr Johnston will address the Foxton electors on Tuesday evening next, at the Public Hall, and Mr Halcombe will also address the electors on Thursday next, Choral Society. — A meeting of the above Society -was called for Wednesday evening last, at the Athenaeum, for tho purpose of confirming a resolution carried at the annual meeting, held the week previous. There was a full attendance of members, only three being absent. Before any busi- j ness was done, Mr Hulke, the chairman of j the previous meetinsr, stated that he had just discovered, on looking at the rules, that ' the meeting could not be held for the purpose for wliich it was called, the rules distinctly stating that any proposal to wind up the society could only be carried at a meeting specially called for the purpose of considering such matter. Consequently 1 the meeting could not be held. However, it was competent for any member to move that a ireeting of the Society bo held. Mr Hulke was then voted to the chair. The minutes of the business done at the previous meeting were th<m read and confirmed. Mr Flower proposed, and it was seconded by Mr M'Lean, and carried — " That a special meeting be called for Friday, the U2nd inst., for the purpose of taking into consideration the advisability of winding up the Society or not." Mr Hulke was appointed Secretary, pro tern. A vote of thanks to the chairman concluded thejmeeting. Entertainment. — In another column will bo seen an announcement of a grand musical and literary entertainment to take place at the Public Hall on Wednesday next. We understand everything possible is being dove to make the affair a great success, and as the object of the entertainment is to augment the funds of tho Rowing Club, which is about to build a shed for the boats, we commend tho entertainment to the notice of our readers. Sir Wm. Fox.— The New Zenland Times of Wednesday last says — t; Sir William and Lady Fox were passengers by the steamer Manawatu, which left for Wanganui last night." As the gallaut knight was in Foxton at Whyte's Hotel, and appeared in the flesh at the tea table there and regaled his inner man, on the same evening that he is said to have left Wellington, we are at a loss to explain the occurrence, unless the leader of her Majesty's Opposition can add the art of spiritualism to his other accomplishments. YVe were under the impression that Sir William Fox arrived by the coach on Tuesday evening, but in the face of such a positive assertion as the above, we hesitate to make a specific statement. Long Train.— On Tuesday last one of tho longest trains which has ever come into Foxton arrived. It comprised 24 pieces of rolling-stock besides the engine, the trucks being loaded with timber, sleepers, firewood, and gravel. The passengers had to alight opposite Whyte's Hotel. On the following day, another long train arrived.
