FOXTON LOCAL BOARD.
A special meeting of the Foxton Local Board was held on Fiiday afternoon last, at 2.30 p.m. Present — Messrs Crowther (Chairman), Loudon, and Coley. MAIN STREET FOOTPATH. Before the minutes were passed, Mr Loudon asked the Chairman the coat of metalling the footpath from the Railway station to Membery's corner. The Chairman replied the total cost was £23 16s sd. Mr Loudon remarked there had been an infringement of the byelays, which provided that all works costing over £10 should be tendered for. The Chairman said that though the whole cost was over £20, the amount was cut up into small amounts for labour, cartage, gravel, &c, no one of which exceeded £10. Besides, it was thought the cost would be less than it turned out to be. Mr Coley said he had given his time in looking after the workmen without charge. STREET TO PUBLIC HALL. The Chairman said the meeting had been called, owing to it havingbeen found that the Board could not legally carry out a resolution arrived at on Wedeesday last. The Board then resolved to form the road from Main- street to the Public Hall. To time objection had been made, on the j^ound that the road had not been legally handed over to the Board. He might say that both the lessees (Mr Whyte and himself) had entered into a bond to the amount of £500, to give a right so far as they were able. Mr Whyte had a purchasing clause, but he (the Chairman) had not. He was prepared to execute a deed to hand over the land to the end of his term, but could not answer as to whether the native owners would see the thing in the same light, He thought they might consent to hand over tbe street. Mr Loudon said that he had gained experience which showed him the tbe Board had proposed to perform an illegal act. He had wished to put a road through portion of his property, but from legal advice he found that all parties having a mortgage or any other lien upon the land must become parties to the agreement handing over the road to the public body, before the money of the ratepayers could be spent upon it. In consequence of this knowledge, be had brought under the notice of the Chairman the desirability of rescinding the mo^osT passed on Wednesday. Mr Coley thought it was a great pity that so large and valuable a property, vhich would greatly increase the rateable value of the township, should not be opened up. The street .- Tefferred to needed making very badly, as it was constantly being used. Eventually, Mr Loudon proposed, " That the Clerk be instructed not to Call for tenders for formation of the road from Main-street to the Public Hall." Fie said the question was a large one, and if this street were made, others would at once come forward, and ask for their streets to be metalled. Seconded by Mr Coley and carried. Mr Coley gave notice to rescind the resolution, authorising the work. The Board then adjourned.
