PORT OF FOXTON.

ARRIVED. Nil. SAILED. Juno 25— Stormbird. ss, 69 tons, Doile, for Wellington. Passengers: Cabin — RJesdnmes Stafford and Hillen, Mr Pnroell. 4 steerage. Liddell, agent. Jane 25 — Tui, ss, 68 tons, Holmes, for Wellington. Thynne, Linton & Co., agents. The steamers Stormbird and Tui sailed for Wellington shortly after noon on "Wednesday. The Stormbird is expected to arrive here this morning, from Wellington. The Jane Douglas is advertised to leave Wellington this afternoon, for Foxton. The big Neptune, which arrived in Wellington on Monday, did the passage fron that port to Newcastle and back in 22 days. Only one trip has been done quicker, the Ladybird, when a three-masted sohooner, having done it in 21 days, under command of Captain He m, who is now skipper of tho Neptune. A recent telegram from Auckland says : — The contractors by the aid of hydraulic lifts, succeeded in raising the s.s. Tnupo nine inches, and a block was safely fixed under her. At this stage the contractors are only abletowork one hour daily,ntlo\v water. Tho work must necessarily proceed slowly. Tho vessel has now been raised twenty inches, and the height required is only fn additional sixteen inches, making in all three feet. The |steamer Wafoitipu, on her recent passage from Sydney to Wellington, met with fierce gales, probably hiving somd connection with those which were felt in New Zealand at the end of last week. A terrific sea broke on board the vessel on Saturday afternoon, doing considerable damage, and washing overboard the officers' steward, a man named W. A. Grant, who was drowned. The chief engineer also had a very narrow escape, being washed overboard, but the next sea washed him near enough to catch hold of the vessel, and he was saved, by wh-.it was almost a miracle. A most extraordinary feature in connection with the Wal»atipu's passage, is tro fact that the coal-brig Neptune, which left Newcastle the day before the big steamer, arrived at Wellington on tne same day, having had a fine spanking breeze the whole way across, and made the run in 9.J days.
