SLAUGHTERING.
TO TUG EDITOU OV TILE IIYN'AWATU HERALD ■■ Sin — Gould you give me any explananafcion how it is 'that our late Constable Pureell and Dr Eockstrow are allowed to 1 slaughter in the township of Foxton, neii thai 1 of them having a licensed slaughterhouse, nor a license for slaughtering. I t merely call attention on account of the pub.'ic health, for it. is not many months since Purcell sued me heforo Sir Ward, R.M , for killing u calf and two lambs, and tried his utmost endeavor to got tho Magistrate to inflict the full penalty of tho law, that was £20— half for the calf, and half for the lambs ; and now ho can kill a largo beast at his b ick door, and no one says a word about it, for he gives away a few of the coarse joints to tho poor of Foxton. Ido not think it is justice for tho butchers to be heavily taxed, and other individuals to bo let free. The v^mii I havo taken it up i* for the bonjfit of the public at large, i'ov if tho butcher was not so taxed, he could afford to supply the public with insat at a far cheapsr rate. On the ot ior hand, not that I care a bit for either of tho gentlemen. They can slaughter as much as they li'je, though perhaps the public m-iy suffer from slaughter yards being pus so close to the town. I notice those individuals are only too glad to catch up anybody, but they do not like to be caught themselves. Hoping, Mr Krlitor, I hivj not intruded too much in your piper, I am, &c, A. S, Eastov, Main street, Foxton. 21rd Jnno, 1879. ]We refer our correspondent to the leading aitiela in this issue. — Ed. M. Hbu-vld.J
