NEWSPAPERS.
. Influence of Newspapers. — A schoolteacher who had been engaged a long time in his profession and witnessed the influence of a newspaper upon the minds of families and children, writes as follows : — "I have found it to bo n universal fact, without exception, that scholars of both "sexes, and ull ages, who have access to newspapers at home, when compared with thosu who have not, are : 1. Better readers, excellent in pronunciation, and consequently read more nnderstandingly. 2. Tiiey are better spellers, and define words .with ease and accuracy. 3. They obtain practical knowledge of geography in about half tho time it requires of othors, as the newspapers have made them acquainted with the location of important places, of nations, their Government and doings on the globe. 4. They are better grammarians, for_having beoorae so familiar with every variety of style in the newspaper, from the common-place advertisements to the finished and classical oratiou of the statesman, they more readily comprehend the moaning of the text, and constantly analyse its construstion with accuraoy. 5. Those young men who have for years been, readers of newspapers are always taking the lend in debating societies, exhibiting a more extensive knowledge on a greater variety of subject?, and expressing their views with a greater fluency, clearness, and correctness."
