FOXTON LOCAL BOARD.
The Board would have nil kinds of (rouble, if subletting of contracts were allowed. — The Chairman said be bad told both parties lie thought the Board would not ratify the ■ arrangement.— Mr Loudon proposed, "That the Clerk inform Messrs Robinson and party that the Board will hold them responsible for the due completion of the contract, no matter by whom performed."— Seconded by Mr Enston, and carried. Letter read from Mr G. Brown asking the Hoard to pay him l()s for two extra chains of draining done by him on No. 4 line. Bequest granted. The following accounts were passed : — E, Brown, for forming drain, £3 10s ; Geo Cook, for making a culvert fiora Avenue Road to Loudon street, £3 10s ; Robinson and party, £22 43, balance of contract for drainage contracts ; the deposits of £5 each on the drainage contracts were also returned ; E. W. Mills, £3 10s, for copying press. A letter was read from E. Brown, offering to continue a drain on No. 1 line at 5a per chain. — Mr Coley thought the matter should be left over until next meeting, a« they should know what other works were re* quired. — The subject was therefore left in abeyance. Mr East on asked what was the financial position of the Board.— The Clerk reported that A3 had been collected as rates, since last meeting. The Chairman faked if the Clerk bad given notico regarding summonses, being issued.- The Clerk said he had, and the time was now expired. — Upon the motion of Mr Loudon, the sum of £5 was placed to the credit of the Clerk to be used in taking out summonses. Mr Cook pointed out that as Mr Crow* ther was now a member of the Harbour Board in virtue of his position as Chairman, if was necessary for the Local Board to return another member to that body.— Mr Easton proposed Mr Loudon, but was informed that gentleman was already a member. — The Chairman proposed Mr "Russell, remarking that any ratepayer was eligibe. Seconded by Mr Cook and carried. The next meeting of the Board wai fixed for the 30th instant. The Board then adjourned.
Wfdsgsday, May 21, 1879. The Board met at 3 p.m. Present — Messrs Crowfcher, (chairman), Cook, Easton, Loudon, and Coley. Mr Coley took his seat for the first time. The minutes were read and confirmed. Memorial read from Messrs Baker, Reeve, and others asking that the drain recently deepened on the Avenue road might be continued tho same depth up to section No. 324 ; also, asking the Board to fill up a low portion of the road between Messrs Reeve and Cook's property before winter. The Board resolved to do the work when f uuds are available* The following tenders were opened for the formation of 10 chains of road on the river bank : — Michael G-uerin, £3 per chain, or lump sum of £30 ; T. M'Carthy, £4 2s 6d per chain ; B. Robinson, £3 per chain ; D. Hogan, £3 6s per chain ; C. if. Collins, £23 10s, lump sum ; John Rashfoigh, £2 15s per chain. Tho tender of Mr 0. fl. Collins was accepted. Memorial read from Messrs Nye, Perreau, .T. Symons, and others, asking the Board to co jtinuo the formation of the drain apon the road situate on the Mill Flat, commencing at the boundary of the Mill Paddock, and to continue the same easterly as far as the boundary of section 209, a* this road line is the only outlet for the water by which they are injured. — Tho Engineer said about 20 chains would require to be constructed. — Mr Loudon pointed out that before the request could by granted, the permission of the Hon. Mr Johnston must first be obtained. He thought that gentleman should be asked to contribute, as his property would bo benefitted. He pro. posed that Mr Johnston be asked to contribute £>1 103 towards the work, when the Board would carry the drain through his land. Seconded by Mr Coley.and carried. It was resolved to inform the memoralists that Bteps are being taken to carry out the work requested. Letter read f rum Mr J. M'Culloch, asking the Board to erect a bridge over the Awahou drain to enable him to reach his land, Section 1. — The Board resolved to form the bridge, with the understanding that the cost would not exceed £$. A letter was read from Messrs Robinson and party, pointing out that an error had. occurred in the laying out of the Main street. The work as done by Mr Cook was only 75 feet wide, whereas the other portion "of the street was 79 feet. The contract let to Messrs Robinson and party was to construct the footpaths 10 feet wide, whereas such a width would leave 2 feet wide acill unformed, on each side of the street. — The matter was discussed at some length, and eventually Mr Cook proposed, and Mr Coley se # condod, " That in consideration of a mistake made in laying out County Road in Mainstreet, Foxton, the Engineer of the Local Board be authorised to sanction tho extra work required in forming footpaths ; such work not to exceed the sum of £10." Carried. The Clerk wa3 directed to apply to the County Council tor a refund of the i'lo. Letter read from T. Kobinson, stating that he had handed over his contract for the formation of the footpaths iv Main street to MrJ. A. Perreau.— Mr Loudon said thu was establishing a dangerous preoedent.
