DAMAGE TO A TENT.

Ben Stickles, a half-caste, was charged on the information of l£awa» na Huaia with having, on the 10th April last, damaged v tent belonging to complainant ; the damage was estimated at £1.

Accused pleaded not guilty. Kawana Hunia deposed— I reside at Horowhenua ; on April 10 1 saw Stickles there ; 1 have charged him with damaging my teat ; oa that day some Europeans came there to shoot the ducks upon my lake,— that belonging to my tribe end myself; I told them to go back again", but they refused; I then took hold of one man's gun to prevent him going any further, and told him I would keep it until he returned; they persisted in going, saying Stickles had given them permission ; I put the gun in my tent; Stickles afterwards came up and asked me where it was ; I pointed to the tent ; he started off to get it ; I followed him, but he got there before me ; my wife told him not to go in ; he pushed his way in before I got there, and seized the gun ; in forcing his way through the door he split the tent : the rent was about the leagth of my arm. „ By the Court — Iy old woman mended it; she was about 3 hours working at it This concluded the case for the prosecution. Stickles said the summons was served upon him at Ohau at 11 o'clock the day before, and two witnesses he could procure refused to come unless subpoenaed, which he

had not had time to do. He applied for an. adjournment, tie was not at Horowhenua on the day in question, and had not torn Huuia'a tent. The case \va3 adjourned till next Court day. This case was also adjourned, as neither party had his witnesses in attendance.
