The Tfiuni.— For the esp>chl benefit of Mr Ifalcoaibo, we m.iy statd that up t-> last Tuesday evening some 3.5U0 of the Sandoa Railway Co.upany shares had boeii applied for, and that so far no canvas lias been made in the S-iudon district, whero ie U certain a great many will bo taken up. We may further mention that it is almost certain the construction of a sectio i of the lino will be conuieacod before Parliament meets iv July. Meeting of Directors.— On Tuesday last, a well attended meeting of the Directors of the Sandon Railway Company, waa hold at the office of Messrs Thynne, Linton and Co, Foxton. The offer of the Hon. R. Campbell to supply the necessary rails at cost price was agreed to. Messrs Sansou and Tompkins were appointed a deputation to canvass Wellington for shareholders. The names of several Wellington gentleman interested in this end of Manawatu, and likely to take up shares in the Com** pany, were mentioned. The schedule of proposed passenger rates and goods charges was also agread to, and will be forwarded to the Government at onco. The articles of association are to be registered immediately. Police. — Constable i£cAnulty, lately of Bulls, has arrived in Foxton for the purpose of releaviug Constable Purcell, who is at present on sick leave. We hear it is more than probable, Constable Mc.luulty will bo permanently located in Foxton. Can it be Tiiub ? — The visit of Messrs Gower and Sauson to Wellington, and their " call " on Mr Macandrew, are doubtless remembered well in the district, also the roaring leaders in our Palmerston contemporary, and tho celebrated " scene " in the Council consequent on the resolution proposed by Air Linton. Aaother such affair is evidently on the boards, and we really must confess our surprise at the in% consistency of Messrs Halcombe, Macarthur, and Liuton, in doing that for which they and their organ so souudly rated poor Messrs Gowor and Sanson ! Lot tho following telegram from tho Wanganni Herald speak for itself: — Palmkbston, April 5 — The Hons. J. Ballanco and J. Majandrew, arrived here by special train from Foxton this morning, and havo been deputationiscd by the County and Borough Councils. In reply to the members of the former, Mr Macandrew promised that two routes for the Wellington-Manawatu railway should be surveyed, and the one having the greatest number of points iv its favour to recommend it would be adopted." The above telegram is far stronger than anything that appeared about Messrs Gower and Sanson. In their case it simply said "of the Manawatu County Council." In the present instance, the " -leputationers " aro called ''the County Council." Surely Mr Linton will move another resolution, to put this matter right before the public. At any rate, the northern men will see from this instance how little fouudation ther« was, for the tall talk they indulged in at last meeting of the Council against their southern brethren. Rates Unpaid.— At the last meeting of the Local Board, a resolution was passed, instructing the Clerk to issue summonses against all who are in arrears with their rates. Looking over the list of rates paid we could not help noticing that the name of the very Commissioner who seconded the resolution for legal proceedings, is conspicuous by its absence. This is inconsistency with a vengeance. Perhaps he may yet find himself singing these lines from Waller:— That eagle's fate and mino aro one, Which on the shaft that made him dio, Espied a feather of his own, Wherewith he wont to sour so high. Often such such public men are " hoist with their own petard." A Patriotic Councillob.— At the meeting of the Foxton Local Board, held on March 28, Dr Rockstrow slaccd that men had told him they would gladly deepen the Avenue drain at 3s Od per chain. The ye» racily of this statement was shown on Tuesday last, when the Board received only one tender for the work, which they accepted, the price being 13s per chain. To explain the discrepancy, it must be understood that the drain in question passes the resider.ee of the Commissioner referred to, and that the above is a foreign method of compassing a desired end. But really Dr Rockstrow so systematically says the opposite of what he pretends to mem, that perhaps he will forget, now the tender is accepted, that he ever said ie could be done at all. No Bill. — Owing to the absence of an important witness in the caso of William Langley, charged at tho Supremo Court, Wellington, with larceny, the indictment was endorsed " No bill," and Langley was accordingly discharged.

Tin: Next Bihkjet.— The result of the colonial revenue for tho current year, sar.s the I'rico Current, is a matter of soma speculation. The return* for tlie firs! six month* e.rcoed the osliniite, but there i.s every reujoii to fear that tho second half of tlu fLiaihiiil year will not give so satisfactory a yi.-ld. The afoNEjr Mabket.— The Wellington Price Current refdw as follows to the money market :— Thero is uo diminution in the stringency of our money market. Banking facilities are limited to strictly legitimate trade purposes, tind the supply of capital for investment in mortgages ia very small. There is an active demand, and 10 per ceut eoulii readily be obtained for considerable sums of money on undeniable securities The dearth of money checks business, and causes considerable inconvenience, nevertheless, the strain has bean borne so far in a way that proves the ganeral soundness of trade in Wellington. Timber Impobtß.— A few days ago, glancing over a Canterbury paper of a recant date, wo noticed that} the imports of sawn timber for one v^jek to Lyttelton, amounted to 351,000 feet. It was imported from Pelorua Sound, Pioton, aud Xnipanr Why does not Minawatu obtain some of this trade f O-crfBttMURY Guam.—T he amount of grain lodged in the v irious stations along the line on Saturday .March 29 was 29,00 i) bags. G-uAry. — The Ashbuiton Mail quotes the following prices : — Wheat, 3s to 3s 3d ; oats, 2s Gd to 2s 10 J ; fbur, £9 ; bran, £o. The prices at Foxton are about as follows : — Wheat 3s 9d to U 3d ; oats, 3s 6i to 4s ; flouv, £10 10s; bran, £4 10s. A\ Inn'ovatiox. — Wj have often heard of a man advertising that he would not bo responsible for his wife's debts, but the Akaroa Mail contains an advertisement in which a mother and daughter notify that they will nob be responsible for any debts contracted by the husband and father. Closed. — The Banks will ba closed on Friday, Saturday, and Monday nei t, being statutory holidays. It ia generally admitted by everybody who has visited Jacobs' Athenaeum Bazar that it is the only shop in Wellington that contains a good aud complete assortment of Fancy Goods and Jewellery suitable for Presents.Birthday Gifts, or Wedding Pressents. Parties requiring any of the above articles will save themselves a lot of trouble by calling and inspecting the immense assortment, which is too gigautic to particularise by advertisement. — [Advt.]
