THE Manawatu Herald. TUESDAY, APRIL 8, 1879.
Pressure on our space owing to heavy reports and advertising favours, compels up to toll over our leading article and a number of interesting locals. To Oub Readers— Owing to Friday nextbeing n holiday, tho Manawatu Herald will be published on Thursday afternoon. Ministerial Vism— The Hon. MrMac« andrew, the Hon. Mr Ballance, and Mr Blacket, arrived in Foxton on Friday after' noon, about 3 p.m., and shortly afterwards rode out in tlie direction of Moutoa, to view the country. In the evening they received a deputation, and next morning started northward per train. Drunk.— Henry Bohamn, whoso arrest wo mentioned la9t issue, was brought before Mr Thynne, J.P., on Friday morning, and fined 20s, or 48 hours. He chose tho latter. New Factoby.— Mossrs Parr and Bennett have recently opened business nt Sanson as coachbuiiders, wheelwrights, &c, nnd judging from tho appearanoe of their workshops, aro doing a uapital business. They have just completed to tho order of Mr T. Bradley, of Feilding, a Whitechapel cart, which will bear moat favorable inspection. The vehicle id fitsed with a moveable top, so as to serve for a baker's cart, and an appliance is fitted to the top to enable the driver to take the bread out without getting down from his seat, at the same time preserving the contents from becoming dusty, and also affordiug good ventilation. The name of the owner, &c, is painted on the outside of the top in gold letters. Another vehiclo of the same description for Mr Cooper, of Palmerston, for private use, is well on its way to completion. The workshops of the new firm aro situated opposite tho post-office, and are well suited for the purpose for which they were built, and we trust the enterprise of Messrs Parr and Bennett will bo as well rewarded as it deserves to be. . ; Sandon Meeting. — When tlio list of persons at Foxton taking shares was read at the Sanson maeting, there was great applause expressed at such a capital stan,. Sanson. — The handsome new building which is being erected at tne above place for the Bank of Australasia is nearly completed, and it is expected Mr Caverhill will be able to make a shift there in about a month's time. Improvement.— The sides of the cuttings though the sandhills on tho Sandon road are now being covered in an ingenious manner by . ti tree, staked down with wire, under the direction of the County Engineer. This is found to be a great improvement and the road in the places where this work has been done is now in a much better state. A Compliment to Sandon.— The rural beauties of the Siradon district have often been noticed by travellers, and although from personal observation we know it presents a charming appearence at any time in the year especially during harvest, we were not aware how far its fame had spread until Thursday evening last. When the deputation had stated all" their wants, and before they withdrew, Mr Sanson, with a keen eye to the main chance, expressed a -wish to drive the min«> isterial party through the district. To this Mr Macandrew replied he was sorry his time would not allow of the trip, as he had to visit tho country as far as New Plymouth, and also Nelson, within a fortnight. He thought a month was necessary to do it properly. He saw districts through the eyes of others. One of his colleagues, the Hon. Mr Fisher, had recently been through the Sandon district, and had told him of its richness, stating it was exactly like some of the best districts in Canterbury, and was, in fact, the only real agricultural district in the North Island The farmers of Sandon may be proud of such a compliment, and we are equally pleased at being able to record it. Whebe is it ?— Mr Carter, of Moutoa, informs us that on Friday last a parcel of seed was sent for him from Wangauui, but had not arrived up to yesterday afternoon. The invoice? reached Foxton on Friday night. Where has that seed gone to ? A Camel Story. — A camel story has come to our ears, from a township in Manawatu. In the township referred to, is a small conventicle, where a number of perBons gather. Recently, a member of the congregation undertook to prove the aw'fulness of a man trying to make money. Having done so, he quoted as the olimax of his oration, what he thought was a scriptural apothegm. But in getting it out, a mixturo took place, thusly : "Itis as easy for a needle to go through a cameP 8 eye as for a rich man to attain Paradise.»
When this startling declamation was made an instant determination lo <ret rich flashed across the countenances of tho audience, us it was an cosy thing to poke II needle through a camel's eyo, and by a parity of reasoning it was equally easy to reach Faradlse. But tho hopes of wealth on eartlitma riches in Heaven were at- Once frustrarod, for the quondam Spurgeon, noticing the audience Ulungc colour, recalled his words, and s:iid, " No, it is easier for a camel's oyo to go throusrh a needle than for a rich man to attain Paradise." Titily, there nr^ preachers and p^atthers. It is geticfatly admitted by everybody who huS Visited Jacobs' Athenasum Bazar that it is the only shop in AVellingtou that contains a good and completo assortment of Fancy Goods and Jewellery Suitable for Presents, Birthday Gifts s Or Wedding Pressents. i'tittfos Acquiring any of the above articles will save themselves a lotof trouble by calling and inspecting tho immense assortment, which ia too gigantic to p-.irlicu-larise by advertisement.^ Advt.]
