THE Manawatu Herald. TUESDAY, MARCH 20, 1879.
The releasing of the duty upon timber appears already to be resulting unpleasantly. Hitherto, Messrs Guthrie and Larnach, of Dunedin, have been considerable consumers of white pine timber from Manawatu. We regret to hear they have written stating that as they can get American lumber landed at a cheaper rate than they pay for New Zealand timber, they intend to use the American ma* terial. We merely mention the faob, and will refer more fully to the question on a future occasion.
