Thains. — The trains have been running rather irregularly lately, owinjj to accidents. On Thursday morning the up train from Halcombe encountered Rome cattle on the line, and one was struck by the engine, which was unprovided with acowcatcher. The engine was thrown off, and it took several hours to place it ugatu in position. Owing *o this the trains — both midday and night— were considerably delayed. Ou Friday afternoon the down train was delayed at Wanganui, owing to the " points" being laid so that the engine ran on to both sots of rails. The consequence was, that the Foxton train had tn go as far as Marton, and did not return until after midnight. . deferring to this matter, we think it desirable arrangements should be made by the Railway Department for telegraphing the departure of the night trains when they are at all behind time. The cost to the Department would not bo very great, and considerable anxiety on the part of the public would, bo saved. It may be explained, also, that, the engine-drivers are not now allowed to travel at a faster rate than the regulation speed, 15 milea per hour. At pne time they used, when starting late, to make up for the delay along tho line, but they are required now to ?rrive the same number of rajnutes late as they start from last station.
