THE TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 18, 1879.
Yesterday was appointed for nominations to be made for members of the Education Board. We have not, of course heard yet the names of those nominated in other portions of the district, but amongst thosd mentioned as likely to seek election are the Hon Mr Fox, Major Noake, Rev. J. Donll; aiid Messrs Hanson, Godwin, Homer, and lirtkcr. It is exceedingly probable Messrs Fox and Sanson will be returned. At any rate we hope so. In the past, those gentleman have zealously devoted themselves to the duties attaching to the position. We may refer more especially to Mr San~
son. An undercurrent has betm woiking in some portions of the clis^ trict against that gentleman's return. We believe any dissatisfaction existing is bimply amongst the teachers of sma'l schools, who think he devotes too much attention to the question of higher education, and too little to the wants of the country districts. The contrary is tho fact. As a
country representative, Mr Sanson has attended most devotedly to the wants of the schools in the Manawatu ; and whilst doing so, has constantly mains tamed the right of .the outlying districts to share in- the advantages of higher education. In fact, Mr Sanhas been a "braise" in the Board upon the centralising tendencies of the Wanganui members. We have on several occasions complimented him upon his advocacy of the interests of the country districts. As recently as the last meeting, he proposed a motion for having a training-school opened at Foxton for the whole ;lis:rict, and also spoke strongly in favour of a district High School being opened in Manawatu. Under these circumstances, we hope to see him returned to his old position. Manawatu, at least, cannot affo-d to exchange his services for those ot a Wangf-nui man.
