AN ARTLESS SWAIN.
An amusing cas3 of misplaced affection and childlike simplicity on tho part of a sporting man in the affairs of the heart is just now the engrossing theme with social circles. It seems that the gentleman alluded to had been paying his devoirs for a considerable timo past to a wealthy young heiress who lives at the Taeiri, aud so successfully had his suit progrsesed that a betrothal was made, and everything but the wedding day fixed. In this happy juncture of things erotic a male friend of the ardont lover arrived from home, and, of course, had to be shown round. He was, amongst others, introduced to Miss , tho fiancee of Jiis boloved frienl, and as, like David, ho is " goodly to look upon," ho found instant favor in tho young lady's eyes The inducement offered by tho fair maiden's expectations, coupled with her charms, united to fire the man's hoart with a loving desire to dispossess his more sedate friend of tho treasure he had all but secured, and ho commenced the attack forthwith The dethroned swain— good, easy man — never suspected those subtle wile*, discoTered not his inamovata'a gvow • ing indifference to him, heard not of his friend's amour, aud was only enlightened some houra after his nu ticipatol bride had been married to the treacherous ingrate whom he had befriended. — Dunedin correspondent of Ashburton Mail.
