THE HYDR A BAD.
The hope 1 ? recently experienced of getting the Hydrabud off have proved futile ; and the ship is now in a worse condition than ever. "She has sprung a lealr, and her pumping gear cannot keep it down. This hap pened when there was every expectation of getting her off. There was a splendid tide for operations on Saturday, and but little swell; the party therefore hoped to gat the ship fairly afloat by noon. The Glenelg went in about nine o'clock, and made fast the s'aip's hawser to her towhook and steamed ahead, a full crew at the same time heaving on the windlass, to which a treble purchase was attached from her chain cable. A.B the tide flowed the ship began to move, each swell assisting to get her to seaward. These operations continued till 10.30, the tide still rising, when the signal went up, " Leak is gaining rapidly." Ceased towing, as it would bo useless to get the ship off to sink in deep water. Communication with the ship showed there was five feet of water in the hold ; at the same time there was fifteen feet five inches depth of water on level bottom alongside of her, and one foot more thirty fathoms astern Thus if tno ship had been dry pumped out and tight, her draft of water would be less than that round her, and she would have been t£.ken to 'Wellington on Sunday by the Glenelg without assistance. Mr Holmwood, brother of the Captain of the Hydrabad, informs us that the water was making at the rate of 5 feet per hour. The New Zealander says the ship is abandoned, and it is likely will be condemned in a day or two. Yesterday afternoon she had slewed broadside, and worked in toward the beach considerably.
[Herald Special— By Telegraph.] Wellington, Monday, 7 p.m. It is decided to ascertain w,aat is the cause of the leak discovered when towing her off into deep water. Meantime the ship is to bo driven hi^h up on the beach as possible, and the cargo will be discharged, after which a decision will be taken whe-. ther to abandon her or not.
