FOXTON PUBLIC SCHOOL.
• ♦ In accordance with the requirements of tho Education Act, the annual meeting of householders in Foxton was hold last evening in the Public Hall, to receive the report of the past year's operations, and to elect a committee for tho ensuing year. Considerable interest was taken in the proceedings, about 30 being present. Mr Crowther was voted to the chuir. The following report was read by tho Chairman of the late committco : — The Committee, in rendering their report of the work thitt has been done during the eight months they have been in office, are happy to be able to say that after a great amount of trouble and correspondence, they leave matter* for their successors in a satisfactory state of progress. During the whole time, from tho first meeting of the Committee to the last, the providing the necessary and adequate increase of accommodation in the school buildings has been their chief object, and •t the meeting held on the Bth instant, it was announced that the contract was taken for the work, to be completed by the 30th April next. There will then be the present schoolroom (with roof raised four feet), and
two additional rooms, one 40ft by 20t't, and tho othf-r 20ft HciUurcj and we hope this will give tht} rcquisiio accommodation fur gome time td°-soiuc«... . ' ' Witn reference to.thd residence for the schoolmaster, wo are infdrraed that &W0 hits been pilt on the estirnutes for buildings for this year by tho Hoard at Wanganui ; but that if not required tho building will not be put up. The Inspector held an exnmiua'.iou of the puuils- on the 19:h and 20th November, the results of which may bo regarded aa highly satisfactory, and most creditable to our schoolmaster. Tho average attendance ior the past year lias been as follows j-^-
The total receiptnto the School Fund Account, lor the period ending this day, have been X'ls Os 6d ; expenditure, £12 7s ; leaving a balarce in hund of £'2 13b (Jd ; there is also to come in the capitation for last quarter, which will amount to £6 15s. The only liabilities are for advertising for teudeis In "Wangantri papers, as per accounts recently to hand. £3 9a. In retiring from office, tho Committee, without desiring to take too much upon themselves, would recommend to the incoming Committee the followiug matters, as claiming their attention:— Previous to completion of the School buildings — Tho making arrangements for carrying on school work somehow and somewhere. After the school is housed in the new building — 1 Additional teaching power due to us, according to the regulations. 2. The enrrying out, or not, the compulsory clauses ot the Act. 3. Providing gymnastic appat ratu*, &c, for tho use of the pupils. 4. ; Providing for higher education, as intended under the regulations of the Board. J. N. Floweu, Chairman. Foxton, January 25. The election of the new committee then took place, the following householders beiu£ pioposed. and receiving the number of votes opposite their names: — Liddell, j 32; Rockstrow, i\ ; Whyte, 20; Stewart, j 18 ; Flower, 17 ; Gray, 16 ; McCulloch, 16 ; j Easton, 12 ; Westwood, 11 ; Crowther, 10; Perreau, 8 • Bartlett, 7. The first seven are cLcted on the new committee.
