THE Manawatu Herald. FRIDAY, JANUARY 17, 1879. INLAND ROAD TO OTAKI.

We aro glad to announce that the nalivo owners of the laud between Foxton and Otaki, have consented to allow a, road ono chain in width to be formed through their property.' This satisfactory result hat been attained throuuh tho efforts of Mr Kebboll, M.O 0 , who on Saturday, Januaiy 4, attended a meeting of the principal natives at Okau, and Sointed out the advantages to be erived by allowing the road to be formed. As will be seen by the let* ter, which wo append, the natives wish the work of formation to be done by themselves, and also reserve the question of the rail tray for further consideration. Regarding the latter point, we understand Mr Kebbell did not discuss the matter with the natives, as it is not the province of the Council he represented to arrange railway lines. We congratulate Mr Kebbell on the successful result of his efforts in the matter. The County Engineer, Mr Hayns, intends to push on with the work of laying off the line at once, and it is probable the work of construction will begin in about two months. The road will strike the Ohau Kiver at a point most convenient for bridging. Appended is the letter from the natives : Otaki, January 4, 1879. To the Chairman of the County Council of Foxton —

Saluatations to you. — We, the undersigned, do agree to give part of our land situato between Otaki and Manawata, for making a road. One chain is the width of the land we agree to allow. Buton this understanding that you agree also to give tp us the work each half within ita own boundaries.

In consenting to this road, wo do agree to ullow the railway to pass over our lands. — Roera Hukiki, Heina te Ao, Tamati Bunapiriand 34 others. .
