WRITTEN TENDERS will be received at this office nntil NOON on MOINDAY, the 20ih Januarys 1879, for the supply and delivery of 10,000 RAILWAY SLEEPERS, to bo delivered and j stacked on Waitara Wharf or alongside the line, at any Railway Station between Waitara, New Plymouth, and Inglewood, or at speci* fied distances alongside the formation between Inglewood and Stratford, as directed. They must be addressed to the Hon. the Miaister for Public Works, Wellington, and marked outside " Tender for Railway Sleepers." Specifications may be seen at the Public Works Offices, New Plymouth, Foxton, Wanganui, Auckland, and Wellington, and the Railway Manager's Office, Picton. Telegraphic tenders, similarly addressed ani marked, will bo received if presented at any Telegraphic Office by NOON of the I same date, provided that written tenders in due form are lodged at a District— CLV Resident Engineer's Office by the same- Jiour, and accompanied by a cheque on some bank !in tho town where the tender is lodged ; such cheque to be specially marked by a banker as good for one month, and to be in favor of the Receiver-General's Deposit Account only, and not to bearer or order. First prize, £5 ; second— -£2. s—Canoe5 — Canoe Race. Post entries. No restriction as to Canoes, or number of crew; paddles only. Distance, once round the course. First prize- £ ; second— £ 6 — Handicap Four oared race. — Distance, about two miles. First prize — £ 1 0 ; second £4 . 7 — Maori Women's Canoe Race. Post entries. 8 — Scullers' Race. Distance, about l£ miles. First prize— £\ 10s ; second, £l 10s. 9 — Four-oared Handicap Race. Open to all boats manned by Mana* watu residents. Post entries. 1 0 — Duck H unt. Post entries. Entrance money 5 per cent on amount of Ist. prize. RULES. 1 All entries to be accompanied by entrance fees, giving name of boat and distinguishing flag, and to be forwarded to the Hon Secretary, at Whyte's Hotel, not later than noon on Monday, 20th January, 1879 2 No prize will be given unless two boats start; no second prize unless three start. 8 The stewards have power to make such modifications in the programme as they may deem necessary, and to postpone any ra - c cr races in the event of bad weather.
