i i MiNtsTEitiAr,. — 'Ihe Native Minister (Mr Sheehan) reached Foxton por train last night. No deputation interviewed him. j Foxrox Local Board.— As will be seen from our report of the procsodings, the ; Local Board are settling down energetically to work, and several tenders are cslled for. We would remind the members, however, i that they shov'd see that the outlying pnr- J tions of tho town are attended to, aud, as ! the funds are necess:ir"y limited, it would I be we'l to ap)joint a "Works Committee, to ! whom ill applications for assistance should j be submitted. Hitherto, the ma' l street! has received a considerable portion of the I money. We "Wore pleased to hear tho views expressed by Mr Liddoll, the Chairman, and one or two other members of tho Board, | upon the uecessity of improving the out- j portions of the township. Wo shall refer to tho auditor's report in next iasue. CahlegkamS. — The latest cablegrams report the Prricess Louise ill with diphtheria. S ! -Hercules Robvisou is appointed Governor of New Zealand, The cricketers reached Mclbor le on Tuesday, and were "warmly received. On the same day the bushrangers (the Kellys) stuck up tho National Bunk at Euroa, on the Beech worth road, and took £300 worth of gold and £1500 in notes, ; Thoy also i tuck up Young'ausband's station at Va'thful Creek. | The Port of Es'..iy.— Mr Sood, chief of \ the Customs {Department, was in Foxton i last week upon a visit of inspection re- '■ garding tho Port of Entry. Most of the ; leading men of the place waited upon him and pointed out the importance of the idea i being ca. ied into effect. Mr Seed, however, declined to express any op' uou of the probaWity or otherwise of Foxton bein" made a port of entry. ° The Concert. — Tho Choral Society held a practice on Wednesday last, when a lar <ye amount of work was got tl -ough. The programme — a most excellent one — is published in another column, and we confidently predict a highly su^cessf i ' concert on "Wednesday next. A practice will he held this evening. School Fete.— A well-attended meeting of ladies was held on Wednesu y af ternooir, and arrangements are now well under wei"-h for tho school fete on Friday next. Wines. —We observe that Mr Whytei with his usual enterprise, h:is lowered the prico of wines and spirit* during tho Christmas holidays. Motoa School. — Miss Grace has been ' appointed teacher of tl 's Bchool, and has ! entered upon her duties. Holiday Fakes.— "We observe that the N.Z S.S. Company are following the-' -usual custom, and advertising return tickets at single fares by the Jane Douglas and other steamers. Regatta.— A meeting is called forios morrow evening, to make a;_angemonts for the annual Foxton Regatta. About £30 is in hand, and we havo no doubt some good prizes will be arranged for. We hope to sec a largo attendance. The Coach.— Owing- to the condition of tho roads on the Horokiwi side of tho hill after the recent floods, tho passengers have to do about 9 miles on foot, and tho coach has therefore been several hoi s late each night. The drivers, however, do their best to push through at an early hour, and deserve credit for the excellent time they make under the present circumstances. Mr Fox. — The Hon. Mr Fox arrived from Wellington en Wednesday evcuinoper coach, and proceeded on to lian<'Hikei on Thi -sday morning. c Many Colors.— At the Local Boar J meetings, the members often indulgo in smart repartee. One of the members the other day asked where Mr Gray was, forgetting apparently, that gentlemm i« no longer a member of the Council. Boing reminded of the fact, he remarked they had now iv their number both black and Whyte. They needed a Gray to give variety. Cikk op CoußT.—The appointment is gazetted of Mr A. f . B. Forster, as assistant clerk in the Resident Magistrate's Courts for the Districts of Manawatu and Otaki. Mr Forster is to remain at Foxton. The Recent Dkow.xino Case.— Captain Gibbon informs us, that had the Glenelg boat put off to save the men in the water > when Petersen -was drowned, owing to tho
build of the bont. slie too wohM most certainly havo been eVvamped. Tho Marino authorities hhve insisted upon the Glenelg's boats being put into thorough order; though they have no power under the Act to demand that there shall be boats of a larger size. Captain Gibbon is entirely of our opinion that it wr/a citi'emely unwise of Captain Wiltchliu to t-ike the surf iv the small boat bi-longing to tho ketch. Tin: liyduaha.!?.— Captaius Gibbon anl Holm wood and Mr Thirkell, manager of the Patent Hip, arrived per Jauo Douglas on Wednesday last, and proceeded to make ;i further survey of tho Hydrabad tho sameafternoon. We understand the ship is still perfectly sound) but We have not heard the result of the survey. Those likely to know, are sanguine of Ihe probabilities of getting her off. We hear tho ship's husband of the firm the vessel belongs to, who is at present in AVelllngton, intends to havo an independent survey before finally deciding what course will be pursued; In the recent survey, Mr Thirkell represented Lloyd's.
