FEMALE TELEGRAPHISTS.
I 4 J His understood that tho employI wient of fomalo operators in the J i.lociric Telegraph offices has n-. t proved a success, either in On.- tit. ; i'ritiiin or in New Zealand, nud that ; tho discontinuance of iho system i:s only a question of time. In Midland it is well-known that the experiment is being carriod on at the express desi ro of her Majesty the Queen, who is benevolently anxious to extend the opportunities of employment to thoso of her own sex who are not so fortunate as to be exempt from the necessity of earning their livelihood. Pro bably, in deference to her Majesty's views, the system ill not be done away with daring the present reign. In New Zealand, however, it has been found that the close confinement during the day is very detrimental to the health of the female operators, the consecjuence being that absence on account cf indisposition is of frequent occurrence, to the obvious disadvantage of tho departmental effi« ciency. Hence we beliove it is not in contemplation to extend the system, or to make any fresh appointment of female operat.rs, but that as vacancies occur they will be left unfilled, or the places of the retiring operators sup* plied by officers of the sterner sex.— Post.
