THE OHAU FURRY,

TO TUB EDITOIt OF THE MANAWATU HEHALD. Sir,— la yourjpaper dated November Ist, you have a local regarding the upsetting of the mail coach, in the Ohau Kiver, which may lead y our readers to think I am neglecting my duties. You also state there are no beacons to show the ford. Now, Sir, I am not responsible for the crossing on the beach, where the accident happened, but only for the inland ford which is always staked out. If the drivers of the coaches, or the public, will cross at the beach when the tide is too high, they must take the risk of an accident. When the tide is not too high, you can cross anywhere you like on the beach, no beacons being necessary. The logs that upset tho coach have been there some time, and can easily be avoided. As to the boy who you state generally shows the uoach across, I know nothing about him, unless ho is the one who meets the coach twice a week for the Ohau mail. He may show the coach over if he likes and often does. He was on the beach the day the accident happened, but objected to go across, as the water was too high, but he offered to show the driver another ford further up, but the offer was not accepted. I am, &c, TnoitAs Koach, Ohau Ferryman. Ohau, November 2nd, 1878. [Another correspondent points out to us that the danger was far greater than was expressed in our local ; but no blame is to be attributed to any one.-— Ed. M. Hbbald.]
