[Herald Special— By Telegraph.] WELLINGTON, Thursday, 7 p.m. The Government have received the most reliable information from Canterbury that the prisoner O'Connor, who is now undergoing ten years' penal servitude for attempted poisoning, had been for some time past in the habit of carrying strychnine in his waistcoat pocket. Christchurch, Sept. 26. Owing to heavy rains and floods two double sets of piles were carried away in the Eangitata Bridge. A lot of passengers were stuck up, and it will be some days before traffic will be resumed. All the rivers aro flooded, and a good deai of damage has been done.
