COUNTY EOADS
TO THE EDITOR OF THE MANAWATU nERALD. Sib, — In your report of the last meeting of the County Council, I see that a subsidy of £100 was voted for the Motoa Road, with great opposi* tion from the Chairman ; his reaaou being that no district road was entitled to assistance until main road? were completed, and that all available funds should be expended on the road from Sanson to Utaki. Sir, some time since arguments, figures, aad statistics were brought forward to prove that while with our present means it was practically impossible* to construct and maintain a inetalS road from Sanson, a railway would pay a dividend ; and upon that undemanding we submitted to a rail- , way rate. In the other diiection, it is proposed, after finishing the roadA to the Ferry (a necessary work), to form and metal the road to the river bank at "VVirokino. Now, Sir, beyond improving the property of half $ dozen settlers, within a mile of the Ferry, no adequate benefit can . b$ derived from ahis work for many years to come ; and when the pro* posed railway to Wellington is con* struefced, it will dcTlHj|^ the necessity for a road, to Palmerston. A nd^^^^^^^^^H| this unreasonable ide^^^^^^^^^^J in this Riding upon^^^^^^^^^^J any traffic is grudg^^^H^^^^H pounds. bir, if you will ki^^^^H^^^H in your valuable P^^^|H^^^| oblige. I am, &c, Foxton, September
