Thursday, September 19. (Before R. Ward, Esq., R.M., and G. M. Snelson and V. Monrad, Esqs., J.P.'a.) BREACH CF STAMP ACT. C. Walker was charged, upon the information of Constable Gillespie, with a breach of the Stamp Act. Mr. Staite appeared for defendant, and entered a plea of not guilty. C. Wylie, a sawyer, residing at Palmersfcon, deposed —- I have had some business transactions lately with defendant ; Walker said that my dog had worried his sheep, and wanted mo to pay £5 for damages , I refused, and he accepted £3, which 1 paid rather than go to Court ; I got a receipt, but cannot read, so do not know if that paper is the receipt ; I took the receipt to Mr liing, and he told me it was no use ; I showed it to the constable, and ho prosecuted Walker. Cross-examined by Mr Staite — Witness admitted that he did not like Walker, and did not believe in him, as he wanted him to pay £10 for damages to the sheep. By tho Court — .The paper I receivod from Walker I gave to the policeman. Constable Gillespie deposed that he had met Wylie incidentally ; he entered into conversation with him, and Wylie pulled out tho receipt and showed it to him; upon receipt of instructions from headquarters, he
