HARVESTING SEASON
SOLDIERS' HELP APPRECIATED. A tribute "to the assistance given by members of the Armed Forces in the harvesting of this season's crops was paid by Mr A. M. Carpenter, president of the Fernside branch of the Farmers' Union, in a statement to the Christchurch Press. There had been a good response by farmers to the efforts of the Wheat Committees in North Canterbury, and in consequence a gratifying and Satisfactory yield was assured, both in regard to bushels and quality, said Mr Carpenter. The loading and forwarding of wheat was being carried out expeditiously with the help and co-operation of officers and men of the Armed Forces, which could be described as being 100 per cent. satisfactory, whenever farmers had sought such assistance. The work done would create confidence among farmers and would prove helpful in enlarging the area for next season's wheat. The facilities provided assured quick handling, so that paddocks could be cleared and cultivation begun for the next crop. Referring to the recent weather conditions, Mr Carpenter said that the nor'-westers had had a hardening effect and showers had fitted the land for - skimming and working. Rape and turnips would be benefited and autumn and winter feed would be considerably assisted.
