AUSTRALIAN WOMEN
CONSCRIPTION INTENDED CONTROL OF MANPOWER. NEW DIREiCTION OF LABOUR.

Australian women are to be conscripted for military service. This decision by the full Cabinet has been announced by Mr Curtin. Legislation will be introduced to Parliament, to amend the Defence Act to permit the compulsory call-up of women for all auxiliary services to begin imm.edia.tely. Greatly increased powers have been given Australia's director of manpower, Mr W. C. Wurth. They include. (1) Authority to direct labour to- channels where it. is most needed. (2) Power to caii up women for compulsory employment. (3) The right. to . approve or i«eject the callup of men, for the Allied Works Council or other undertaking requiring labcur. Previously the Manpower Department had no power to divert. labour from one job to another considered mere important. In future Mr Wurth will have power to decide where any man or woiman in Australia shall work.
