DISPARITY IN FINES
PRICE CONTROL BREACHES. The disparity in fines imposed by different magistrates in the Dorninion for similar offences under the priee control regulations is mentioned in the Labour newspaper, the Stanclard. It publishes a list, supplied by the Price Tribunal, of the traders who were prosecuted between November 3 and December 10 last and the penalties imposed1. It is mentioned that in Auckland fines of £20 and costs were imposed for breaches of vegetable price orders, while in Wellington, Christchurch and other places some traders were merely convicted and ordered to pay costs for similar breaches. In Timaru and Fairlie fines ranging un to £15 were entered. This disparity, states the article, has been one of the difficulties facing the tribunal in its work of policing the regulations, but the amendments gazetted recently correct this anomaly by prescribing minimum fines for serious breaches involving proffteering and black marketing.
