AKYAB BOMBED & STRAFED

AIM OF JAP. RAIDS ON BENGAU.

L B.O.W.

RUGBY, Oct. 27.

R.A.F. bombers, with fighter escort, yesterday attacked the Japanese base at Akyafo, says a New Delhi communique. Buildings were bombed and fires started. Our planes followed this up with low-level machine-gun attacks. None of the R.A.F. aircraft is missing. Commenting on the raids against Chittagong, the New Delhi correspondent of the British United Press says it is believed that the Japanese are trying to knock out the air route to China, and are therefore attacking bases from which they consider Allied planes are taking off. The Daily Telegraph's New Delhi correspondent says that increased air activity on the India-Burma frontier, where General Wavell's army is preparing for an eventual invasion of Burma, coincides with the ending of the monsoons. These sudden raids may be explained in two ways: Firstly, the Japanese hope to hinder Allied preparations for an offensive against Burma; and secondly, Japanese are trying to knock out the Allies' east Indian bases in preparation for a Japanese invasion.
