MINERS WARNED
STRIKES IN AUSTRALIA. MR CURTIN'S FIRM STAND. SYDNEY, Oct. 3. Australia's Prime Minister, Mr Curtin, declared in the House of Representatives at Canberra that the Government would not tolerate for one moment an interruption of Wrir Industries. He was replying to Captain Harrison (United Australian Party, New South Wales), who asked whether the Government's attention had been directed to a published statement by an official of the westerh miners that the employees at 15 mines in that district would go on strike if the tobacco supplies were not increased.
Mr Curtin said he had not seen the report, but it was known that for some little time there had been industrial unrest over the question of the supplies of tobacco and tea available. He was surprised when he read that miners had threatened not to work unless their starting times were altered because of intro- j duction of daylight saving. The Government, Mr Curtin added, was anxious that all sections of the community should have a fair deal, and would see what arrangements could be made for the most equitable distribution of whatever comrnoclities were available. ;
