Mr E. P. Meachen, M.P., returned from Wellington last night. Mr W .M. Denham, M.P. for Invercargill, arrived from Wellington last night, and will be leaving for the south on Monday morning. He is a guest at the Criterion Hotel. Major Murray A. Falconer is appointed neuro-surgeon at the Dunedin Hospital. He is at present a specialist to St. Hugh's Military Hospital (states a P.A. telegram). Educated at the Otago Boys' High School and University College, Major Falconer went to England in 1934. He was a surgical research scholar at the Mayo Clinic in the United States, being nominated by the British Medical Research Council. He was the first student to be nominated by the combined Dominion University for the Nuffield Fellowship at Oxford, where he specialised for three years in neuro-surgery. He is a son of Dr A. R. Falconer, formerly medical superintendent of the Dunedin Hospital. A Government grant enabled the appointment to be made, and Major Falconer 's services will be available to other centres.
Mrs Mary Aiice Neal, whose death occurred at Picton recently in her 82nd year, was the widow of the late Mr Frederick Neal, who predeceased. her seven years ago. Well-known residehts of the district, held in popular regard, they were engaged in farming at Koromiko and Grovetown successively, and on the disposal of the farm at the latter place some 14 years ago, they retired and settled at Picton. Mrs Neal leaves four children, who are Mrs Alice Gale (Picton), Mrs F. V. Stratford (Blenheim), Mrs J. W. Price (Havelock Suburban), and Mr Rupert Neal (Blenheim). She was predeceased by two children — Mrs Baldick (Queen Charlotte Sound) . and Mr Horace Neal, who was killed in the first Great War. Mrs Neal was the youngest and last surviving of the nine children of the late Mr James Jackson, the pioneer whaler and sealer of Te Awaite, who is an especially interesting figure in the early history of Marlborough. She was born at Te Awaite. Guests at the Criterion Hotel last night included Miss C. McClune, Mr W. R. Cbok (Leeston), Mr and Mrs A. C. Wilson, Mr and Mrs W. D. Garrick, Mr D. G. Garrick (Christchurch), Mr A. C. Petley (Westport), Miss J. McArthur (Levin), Mr W. M. Denham (Invercargill), Miss P. Howard, Miss J. Kent (Wellington), Mrs B. W. Nixon (Palmerston North), Mrs R. Whelam (Ashburton), Mr and Mrs J. W. Wilson (Balclutha), Mr P. Hoggarth (Brunnerton), Miss D. Waghorn, Mhs W. Miller, Mr L. G. Taplin (Kaikoura).
