MR HENRY JAMES GLUYAS.

The late Mr Henry James Gluyas, whose death occurred suddenly at his horne at Grassmere last week, was a widely-known and much-respected member of the Awatere farming community. A member of a Southland family, he first came to the Marlborough district after the Great , War, when in 1919 he took up land | at Grassmere. As a young man he had been engaged at Balfour, in Southland, in farming operations with his brothers. He served in the South African War with the 8th Contingent, and he also saw extensive service in the last war. Despite his age of 63 the present conflict did not find him wanting, for soon after the outbreak of hostilities he joined up as a member of the Independent Mounted Rifies Squadron, with which he was engaged until he suffered a serious injury through being kicked by a horse, afterwards being a hospital patient for some weeks. He took an active interest in the affairs of the R.S.A. and was secretary of the Seddon branch for some years, as well as being connected with the South African War Veterans' Association. He was keenly interested ih bowling, being a member of the Awatere Bowling Club, of Which he was secretary for several years. He also served 011 the Grassmere School Committee. He is survived by a widow and a family of four. An only son, Henry, is serving with the Armed Forces, while a daughter, Miss Alane Gluyas, is a V.A. at a Blenheim emergency hospital. The two remaining daughters, Misses Mary and Helen Gluyas, are attending Nelson Girls' College. Messrs Frank Gluyas and R. J. Gluyas, of Canterbury, are brothers. The burial service was conducted by the Rev. G. Barker. Pall-bearers were Messrs A. J. Dick, F. J. Beamsley, B. J. Kennington, C. F. Hammond and L. F. Round. The Last Post and Reveille were sounded in honour of his military service. \T
