LONDON, Oct. 20.
A former Hurricane1 night-hghtei' squadron is now flying the latest type of fighters. The squadron got its first daylight kill over the Channel shortly after a, visit by the New Zealand High Commissioner, Mr Jordan, the N.Z. Air Secretary, Mr Barrow, and Group Captain Isitt.
Fiiot Officer G. G. Thomas (Epsom) and Sergeant A. N. Sames (Onehunga,) saw bombs droppcd on the south coast of England. A few minutes later they spotted two Focke-Wulf 190s racing for home low down over the sea. They chased the Germans for ten miles, P/O Thomas said: "We concentrated against one and caiight up with hina and made a number of / attacks. Pieces flew off the Focke-Wulf, which caught flre cnd cartwheeled into the sea and brokc up into pieces." Botli pilots were credited with half each. This makes the squadron's score one and a half. for only half was subsequently credited to Flight Lieutenant H. N. Sweetman (Mission Bay), who attacked a night-raider in July.
Squadron-Leader J. S. Dinsdale. D.F.C. (Te Kuiti) married Agnes Hill TulJis, of Strathendry Castle, Fifeshire, at Leslie Church. The best man was Flight Lieutenant R. G. Hartshorn (Auckland). Many of Squad-ron-Leader Dinsd.ale's old squadron | members were present. One gave a j "beat up" to the reception in a ■ Mosquito. Wing-Commander E. H. McHardy, D.F.C. and bar (Waipawa) takes an unseen part in the latest filni "Coastal Command." He flies a Junkers 88 which is shot down when attacking Sunderland flying-boats. Wing Commander McHardy came to London to see the fllm, which tells the story of how Coastal Command protects convoys fr.om the attacks of raiders in co-operation with the Royal Navv.
An Aucklander, W. N. Hancock, has been promoted to lieutenant- in the R.N.Z.N.V.R. The follovving have received temporary commissions in the R.N.Z.N.V.R.: Sub-Lieutenants C. W. Holmes (Hawera), A. R. Pritehard, H. A. Moiton and R, A. Mitford-Burgessi, and the following members of the Fleet Air Arm : J. D Wallace. (Wellington) and W. S. Appleby and D. F. Dillon. Mr Jordan is shortly presenting to No. 75 (New Zealand) Wellington Bomber Squadron twelve tankards which are a present from their former commanding oflicor, Group Captain M. W. Bucklev. This is a timc-honoured practice, and the majority of the officers have presented tankards to the squadron. Many of the tankards, unfortunatelv, are now bearing the names of those lost over Germany. Group Captain Isitt is shortly presenting the New Zealand Torpedo-Bo-mber Squadron with a, pdcture of a kiwi sent to England. by a Weilingtonian, Mr Harry Mackintosh, 011 behalf of the Civil Service Club. Group Captain Isitt has had it framed. The Squadron's crest includes a Kiwi standing on a torpedo, for which reason the oicture is most appropriate. v
