MELBOURNE CUP TRIALS.

MELBOURNE, Oct. 20.

After his poor display in the Caulfield Stakes, Velocity heartened his Melbourne Cup admirers by a brilliant trial ten furlongs in 2.111 at Mentone to-day. He was ridden by his Cup pilot, O. Phillips. Trainer Ron Cameron overcame the difficulty of obtaining a lightweight rider for Amazed by securing the release of C. Sanderson from a prior engagement to pilot Watchguard. E1 Golea rnoved scratchily in working to-day. Skipton did a mile in 1.49, but his Cup supporters are a little anxious as the horse has not been seriously tried since his Stand Handicap win. Trainer Pryer gave an assurance that Skipton is better than at any lime of his career. V
