NEGLECTFUL PARENTS

GIRLS ALLOWED TO RUN WILD. Amazement at the way some parents allow their girls to run wild was expressed by the Chief Justice, Sir Michael Myers, when a 20-years-old soldier, John Robert Thomson, came before him in the Supreme Court at Palmerston North for sentence on a charge of carnal knowledge. The Crown Prosecutor, Mr II. R. Cooper, had intimated that this was not the first occasion that the girl had been concerned in such an action, although she was under age. His Honour stated that while young girls must be protected, there were cases where boys required protection from the wiles of some young girls. "What you did, although reprehensible, is not surprising under the circumstances," his Honour told Thomson. "If parents either will not or cannot control their young girls and look after them and keep them from relationships of this sort, the Court cannot be expected to do it." Thomson was admitted to probation for 18 months.
