The famous — or rather infamous — " Blue Slip," where a considerable porticn of New Zealand has been trying to shuffle off to the South Pacific carr ing steel rails as an off er ing to the ocean gods, is at present quiescent, it is hoped, permanently. The whole area of slippery face has been drained and redrained, and it appears that this had the effect of induoing inertia in the obstinate area which has made some good engineers look blue. At present the place is unusually dry, and there is a hopeful feeling that the heavy draining operations may be something pretty close to checkmate.
