The Nevis field (the report continues1) is estimated to contain at lease 150,000,000 tons of oil shale deposit, and, even if the industrial oil yields are less than half the nmounts indicated in the tests, this: is more than offset bv the reduced production, costs, when ;it is considered that the deposit is a surface o-ne and erasy of accesisi Otago- has a reputation for initiative and enterprise. and, now that the' country is threatened with a power and fuel ishortage, it would appear that. the1 development of shale1 oil should be the immediate concern of the whole provi'nce.
