MARLBOROUGH CLUB. SEASON NOW UNDER WAY. On Saturday afternoon the Marlborough Tennis Club's pourts were opened for the season under ideal weather conditions. They presented a most pleasing appearance and were in splendid condition considering the dry spell recently experienced. A record attendance of members and visitors included a large number of members of the forces. and the c-ourts were fully occupied until late in the evening. In the unavoidable absence of the Mayor the president (Mr G. Palk) declared the courts open for the season. A telegram was received from Mr E. P. Meachen, M.P., apologising for his absence on account of Parliamentary duties, and wishing the club a successful season. The president welcomed the visitors and appealed to the members to rally round the club and keep it flourishing as a duty to the large number of male members who had worked hard for it and who were now serving with the forces. Before declaring the season open, Mrs Palk, wife of the president, hit the first ball over the net. Captain de Castro, on behalf of the members of the forces, thanked the club for its hospitality, and expressed the appreciation of the men for the privileges accorded them. At the conclusion of the opening ceremony a dainty afternoon tea was dispensed by the ladies. In accordance with the request of the Mayor, racquets and balls were available for the use of casual members of the forces, and these were rnade full use of during the afternoon.
