EARLY BUSHFIRES
MILES OF COUNTRY SWEPT. SYDNEY, Oct. 3. A bushfire recently swept many miles of country in the Woolgoolga and adjoining areas, near Grafton Starting near Woolgoolga pound yard, the fire swept to the beach homes of C. Leplaw and R. Scholfield, which were saved only after a strenuous fight. A strong wind carried embers across Lake Headland and started a fire on the other side. The flames raced on through miles of country in the Pipeclay, Red Rock, and Corindi districts. Women and girls, swinging wet bags and bushes, failed to save the home of W. Lee. A party returning to Woolgoolga in a motor-truck had a narrow escape when they were blocked by the fire on each side of the road and a tree which had fallen across the road. They escaped without injury.
